Thursday Evening

There are no major changes this evening. They are still managing her blood pressure with meds to make sure it is not too low. They gave her a new sedative that is making her much less agitated. When the old sedative would wear off just a little she was trying to get up and her oxygen saturation was going down. So they tried a new sedative tonight that the nurse said is making her much calmer and less anxious. They said she was resting very peacefully.

Tonight Kelly and I were also saying that we would love more people to read to her, sing to her and play music for her. I know we all believe in the healing power of voice and music. Ray and Jane are going to be playing some music for her tomorrow and we are so grateful to them for that. We are also happy to take requests for readings that we can read to her or songs we can play for her.

On this blog you can add comments that would be a great place to make requests or just leave sentiments to Patti. When Patti is healed we look forward to sharing this blog with her to show her how far she has come and if people leave comments than that will be like a virtual "get well" card. To leave a comment click the link that says how many comments there are at the bottom of each update and then it will let you add a new comment.

  1. Hi there, My name is Shams Cohen, and I'm one of the students who was in the choir at the benefit last week. Just wanted to say that my prayers are with Patti and all those who care for her. We have been sending all kinds of blessings from Starr King, and are always in the loop of both giving and receiving blessings, where Patti is concerned. Thanks for posting the blog. No one here is alone! Peace & Healing...

  3. Thanks so much for creating this blog! I've been holding Patti in my heart and prayers since Tuesday, when we learned what had happened. She has been very much with me as I walk through my days. I'm so glad to have more information about what Patti is facing and how I/we might be of help.

As for music suggestions, at the gala in her honor last Thursday, we talked about how much Patti loves UU hymns. The Oakland UU Church choir has three CDs of UU hymns. UUs in Davis might have copies you can borrow (if Patti doesn't own them herself!). Alternately, they're available via CD baby. Go to http://cdbaby.com/cd/chancelchoir2 for the third CD and scroll down to links to the first two. Or, if it's easier, send me a mailing address and I'll mail them to you.

If you'd like folks to come sing or read in person, please let us know. Most Starr Kingers have been staying away, having been advised that cards and prayers are welcome at this time, but not visits. We'd be happy to come if/when that feels appropriate and helpful.

sending much love and strength to you as you accompany Patti on this journey (and much love and strength to Patti too, of course!). Know that there is a huge community of friends, students, colleagues, admirers sending love from afar.

  4. I was with Patti for a couple of hours Friday afternoon. It was the first time I had been there alone, and it was strange. I am learning that part of going to see Patti is being with the family of friends she has created. Being together is a healing balm for us all. Even when Patti is unconscious and seemingly unresponsive, you can feel her presence. I think this is why it feels so important to sing to her and read poetry and her favorite readings to her. I read "We need one another," which Rebecca told me is one of Patti's favorites. I sang several UU hymns and read a few other readings, too. She was much more calm and peaceful than the days before. The nurse told me she was very heavily sedated so she wouldn't get agitated. Patti, I love you more than words can say.

  6. Love and sweetness in each moment to Patti and all with her here and there. When I found out the news, I was in Boston at "P&E" and able to share the information I had with folks there. So much love was sent to Patti--a rush of caring and concern, connection &sharing. Love across the years & miles! Patti, your journey is love.
Jodi Tharan, SKSM student and lucky to have taken a Special Reading Class with Patti we called, Congregations & Change! The Gala was so wonderful. I thought we might knock the JCC over when we were stomping & cheering for Patti!
